Asphyxia is a rather conflicting game for me. It, at first, seems like a recipe for a hit given its odd premise of being a yuri dating sim where the girls are based off of British authors from the 1800s and early 1900s (which is going to be lost on anyone who is not an English major, so I’m not going to be talking about it much). It also tells what by all means should be a very engrossing and compelling storyline with deep characters and mature themes. There is a lot to like about Asphyxia, but for once the problem with a story is not that it is shallow or amateurishly written.
Instead, much like those works of “classic” literature that we we’re forced to plow through in school, Asphyxia’s writing is plodding and stuffy. The characters do not talk like real people, there is an unnecessary amount of description put into insignificant details, and I just found myself trying to speed read through as much as I could in order to finish the game. In the end, I was curious enough about the storyline to get every ending, but it is not a game I plan to replay nor is it one I can recommend. Read more
I’d say I’m surprised it took me as long to get around to Nekopara Extra as I did, but I’m really not. This is just what happens when you not only have a ton of games to play AND write reviews for, but also are busy in several other areas of your life. I’m also so backed up on reviews that I’m basically writing this review a month after completing the game so my memory may be a little bit fuzzy in regards to the specific plot events, especially since Nekopara Extra is a pretty short game.
While Nekopara Extra is longer than Vol. 0, it is still pretty brief and doesn’t really feel like a full game. Then again, I don’t think Nekopara Extra was intended as anything rather than a brief prequel to each of the remaining entries. Nekopara Extra was a game offered as stretch goal of the Kickstarter campaign for the OVA based on Vol. 1. There was actually an additional stretch goal to make an additional animation based on the then non-existent prequel… a stretch goal for a stretch goal. The campaign fell short of the $1,000,000 dollars needed for that stretch goal, but the fact that a series of visual novels about catgirls reached $963,376 to begin with is quite remarkable. Love at First Sight is a visual novel created by first time developer Creepy Cute, which actually only consists of one person know as Ray-kbys. He has stated that his reason for deciding to make Love at First Sight a visual novel instead of a doujinshi was due to the fact that it is much harder to get a doujinshi published in the US than in Japan (which he has knowledge of due to being born in Japan but living in America). However he did end up realizing that creating a game is not an easy task and even saying that he may have bit off a bit more than he could chew (though that isn’t a direct quote mind you).
Love at First Sight is made to feature an original character Ray created through Deviantart submissions before he ever considered the idea of the game. Said character was a shy girl named Sachi Usui who has only one eye and lot of scars (which he admits in the game’s extra features was because he had a fetish for both Cyclops and scars). The story is not told from her perspective however. It is instead told from the point of view of Mamoru, a boy who falls for her moe charm. Read more
Nekopara Vol. 3 was a conflicting game for me to say the least. Every time I criticize an eroge’s sex scenes I tend to be overly cautious about getting flooded with comments calling me a triggered feminazi. I seem to have avoided that result since starting this blog considering I’ve rarely one to not make my sex positivity apparent, but it may also be because I tend to examine these games on their own merits to a far greater extent that most critics even attempt. Starless: Nymphomaniac’s Paradise was a game that scarred me so badly that it caused suicidal thoughts but I’m still able to name some good qualities. But I’m NOT going to talk about that fucking game again; I’d rather stick to good games here.
It’s been a few years since I reviewed the first Nekopara title. For those reading this immediately after the ones for the previous three games in the series (counting Vol. 0) then I feel I should note for disclosure’s sake that some of my perspectives have changed in the last few years. Namely I am referring to my newly found feminist beliefs. While I am still FAR from sex negative, I tend to be far more critical with erotica than I used to be.
Namely the issue I have is that I enjoy hentai, but I enjoy it for different reasons than most. Eroge tends to have FAR more emotion and genuine artistic expression involved then 99% of western pornography and thus I am able to become more engaged with it. I’ve made my opinion on Sakura Spirit pretty clear in the past; I don’t like it. As much as I exaggerate my own sexual deviancy for comedic effect… you know where this is going. Having nice… scenery… can only get you so far if you are vapid and uninspired. But enough about Katy Perry!

So I have decided on one specific song I felt the need to talk about for a while. This week’s VGM comes from the eroge, Nekopara Vol 1.
Now this song sound like a very sweet and beautiful track; one that actually uses a loud base instrument to a good effect that makes the song stronger than if it was just the softer instruments. As a composition, it is a very simplistic track, yet it serves its effect very well. So one may be wondering what type of scene a song like this would be playing during; why during the scenes where you are screwing your catgirls of course.
Sakura Spirit was a game that, at first, looks like it would appeal to me. The reason for this is that just about any fanservicey anime game is a natural curiosity for me. What can I say; I’m a girl that knows what she likes. Unfortunately that was not the case with Sakura Spirit as it turned out to be nothing other than a boring tease.
The key problem with Sakura Spirit is that it has nothing going for it other than sexy women in compromising poses, and that simply is not enough to keep one’s attention if the rest of the game is flat out boring. You can experience just about everything there is to Sakura Spirit just through Google image search.
If one has been hanging around gaming circles a lot recently, one may have noticed the term “backlog” thrown around a lot, a term is used to refer to the amount of games one owns but has not completed. The fact that many gamers nowadays have backlogs that consist of hundreds of games has almost become somewhat of a meme in and of itself, and is often compared to how girls will buy large amounts of clothes that greatly exceed the amount they need.
I am not going to pad things out by pretending the reader thinks all games are new AAA releases that cost $60, and the first word that likely popped into any experienced gamer’s mind is likely “Steam.” However, one would think that even Steam sales would have their limits, and they would be right. So I decide that the best way to demonstrate would be to take you throw this step by step and show you how this was done.
Nekopara Vol. 0 should not really be looked at as its own game since it is only a fan disk of Vol. 1. A fan disk is an added scenario to games, mostly visual novels, that is released after the successful launch of a game. It is similar to added DLC chapters released for more popular titles. As such, one’s enjoyment of Nekopara Vol. 0 would largely be based on how much they enjoyed the first game, and that it is highly suggested that one would play Vol 1 first if there is any interest in this one.
