This week’s VGM is a special track. This track has an especially notable significance to me in not only how it sounds, but also what it represents. In the past I have often made Amazing VGM pieces that connect to me personally in regards to my very own struggles in life, I believe that games have a very significant personal element to them that many are often discouraged from sharing for not being “objective,” and I feel this greatly undermines the medium as a whole.
Anyway this week’s track is from Persona 3, a flawed game in many ways but nonetheless one of my all time favorites. I have been replaying this game and I’ve just about reached the end of The Journey portion of the game. While I find the overall musical output of Persona 3 rather average, there are some standout tracks that have a very deep and meaningful impact when you hear them. This track is one of those.
Yep, another “VGM from a game I just reviewed” piece here today. There isn’t really a set plan more so than reviewing a game just makes me remember its music so I have it stuck in my head later. I may not have enjoyed Pac-Man World 1, but there was definitely some finer points to it. I only briefly mentioned the music because most of the music didn’t stick out but I remember it being good. The Final Fantasy series is to amazing video game music what Donald Trump is to the KKK; something celebrated. A series that extends to over 50 games and nearly every one of them has at least a decent soundtrack and many of them are exceptionally awesome. Thus far I’ve only had two Amazing VGM entries from this series, one from the beloved Final Fantasy VII and another from the not so beloved Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. Today’s entry comes from the much less talked about Final Fantasy III, the original Famicom one to be precise.
Sorry there has been an absence of game reviews and or related content as of late. I recently became rather bogged down with the amount of content to write about that I needed to take a break. If one couldn’t tell, my next review is going to be of LISA: The Painful. I just got done playing it as well as its DLC expansion LISA: The Joyful recently, and I found them both amazing, although I don’t consider The Joyful to be a separate game due to its short length.
Anyway LISA is probably my 4th favorite RPG at this time behind Earthbound, NieR Automata, and Undertale. I really like how it refuses to shy away from a lot of seriously dark subject matter the same way most games do, and I even think it has a lot of advantages over the previous three games I mentioned.
It seems like Yandere Simulator is the popular thing to hate given how its developer has been… kind of a prick to some people. I have my own thoughts on YandereDev himself but I plan to save those for later. The thing is, it’s important to separate an artist from his art sometimes. Phil Fish has been a monumental douche in the public eye but I do still plan to give FEZ a chance at some point. I also know quite a few people who enjoy playing Minecraft despite the fact that Notch is a total shitlord (although it helps that he no longer owns the game and thus doesn’t profit off of it).
Also, let’s remember that there is more than just one person making most of these games. Yandere Simulator has had a lot of talented artists and creators who have volunteered to help with the game. It is also clear that Devpai has very high aspirations for the game… which only ensures that it will keep getting pushed back Duke Nukem Forever style but I can at the very least appreciate the passion that goes into it. Simon’s Quest was an interesting game. There were a lot of unique ideas present at the time and it laid the groundwork for what Koonami would later perfect with Symphony of the Night. Yet there are also a lot of shortcoming present. I’m not here to talk about those though, we’ve all seen the AVGN video after all. It’s about time I covered a VGM from Rosenkreuzstilette, the soundtrack to this game somehow manages to be better than the Mega Man games themselves. It really takes a lot to accomplish that. There was such an intense amount of effort put into this game’s soundtrack that I don’t know where to begin, so I’ll just cut to the chase. Today’s VGM is “26,” the theme for Luste’s Stage.
Well, right now I can definitely say I am hooked on Super Mario Odyssey. I have over 350 moons thus far and have yet to even “beat” the game in the traditional manner. I think it’s safe to say that I love this game. There may have been a few moments where I felt that it went a bit overboard on the collectables and a few of the moons suck (Fuck 100 Jump ropes and 100 volleys!), but I’ve been finding this game’s expansive worlds and the amount of creative mechanics to be highly engaging.
And there’s the music. The first song that one thinks of when they think Super Mario Odyssey is likely “Jump Up! Super Star!” but there is one track that I think is better. Super Mario Galaxy is a tough act to follow in a lot of ways but music wise it is especially difficult to follow up. Personally I still think the Galaxy titles had better music than Odyssey but the latter is still no slouch. It figures that my favorite track is one that sounds like it was leftover from Galaxy. Well would you look at that, Megadimension Neptunia VIIR is out now and I haven’t even reviewed the original version of it. I have no idea how much is changed from one version to the other but there is one thing that certainly doesn’t need to change; the music. I’ve already talked about the other two boss themes from this game, “Voltage” and “Fate.” Both of those are amazing boss tracks but they are mere noise compared to the glory that is “Encounter of Destiny.” Read more
I’ve never been one to avoid connecting my personal life into my game related articles. After all, if someone is reading this blog then it’s because I have a unique style that no one else can replicate. I may as well not hide the fact that I am an individual person with her own experiences and feelings. It is those experiences that make me who I am and it is who I am that allows me to do what I do.
Fittingly enough, this week’s song is about learning to take care of and believe in yourself, and given what just happened I cannot think of a more appropriate time to cover it. The song is titled, appropriately enough, “Believe in Myself” and is the character theme of Tails from Sonic Adventure. Read more
