JRPG Update: 5/21/2017 – 5/27/2017

Well, we have got quite a bit lined up for this week in regards to JRPGs and JRPG influenced games. Then again, there is always a sizable about of new stuff available. And to think some say that JRPGs are dead.

Anyway, within the last week, we have seen the release of Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception (PS4/Vita), Star Ocean: Till the End of Time (PS4), Acaratus (Steam), and Disgaea 5 Complete (Switch). So today is looking especially good for SRPG releases.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age gets 57 new screenshots released, in addition to three more soundtrack sample videos and two new trailers.

Dragon Quest XI’s smithing system is explained in detail horse racing and casino features are introduced, we are given 25 minutes of gameplay footage and a new live action trailer, and they will have something to say about the Switch version when the timing is right. The Switch version of Dragon Quest X, on the other hand, will be released in Japan on September 21st and August 17th for PS4.

Other Dragon Quest related news includes a general improvement mod for Dragon Warrior II on the NES that includes increased gold and exp gains from battles, more challenging mini-bosses, adjusted chests and shops, late game equipment buffs, and name changes for the Prince of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke.

Details given on Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker’s Memory‘s Domination battle system, characters, and the new Digimon Zubamon.

Level-5, developer of Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest VIIINi No Kuni, and Professor Layton, has announced that they are working on games for the Nintendo Switch, and Akihiro Hino even gives some positive words about Breath of the Wild.

Two new characters, the Japanese voice cast, and the tactical link and field attack systems have been revealed for Trails of Cold Steel III. Additional details have also been provided for the characters. and off screen footage has been shared from a store display in Akihabara.


Final Fantasy XV May 24th update fixes bugs, and adds a survey to the title screen about future updates.

SINoALICE, a new mobile RPG by the director of NieR and Drakengard Yoko Taro, is set for launch on June 6th in Japan.

Megadimension Neptunia VIIR set for August 24th release date in Japan. Also has its first screenshots released.

New turn based RPG The Lost Child has been announced and takes place in the same universe as El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. A teaser trailer and a first look are also available.

Ecchi RPG  Genkai Tokki: Castle Panzers has its characters and gameplay systems introduced.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has presentation slides and key artwork leaked. You can tell this isn’t fake because only Nintendo is capable of thinking anyone actually wanted this crossover. Eh but will see, maybe this could turn out decent.

Also on the subject of Mario RPGs, Super Mario RPG has received a Master Quest mod.

Disgaea 5 Complete has been rated for PC by the ESRB and is delayed in Australia by one week.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology has details released for its new bonus dungeon the Vault of Time, Sub-history episodes, and a new character trailer.

Keisuke Kikuchi says to look forward to more announcements regarding the Atelier series’ 20th anniversary.

Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo ponders future Ys titles after Ys VIII, including the possibility of Ys Warriors (In the same vein as Hyrule Warriors, Dragon Quest Heroes, and the upcoming Fire Emblem Warriors). Meanwhile, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is set for release in September in both North America and Europe, has a Steam release in addition to its PS4 and Vita releases, and has its opening cinematic has been unveiled.

Steampunk SRPG Acaratus has left early access and has now been released officially on Steam.

Nights of Azure 2 set for August 31st in Japan on PS4 and Vita; Switch release is still to be determined.
