So, most mainstream game journalist sites are getting ready to give the game of the year award to Horizon: Zero Dawn, Super Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, NieR Automata, or Persona 5; all of which sound like they deserve it for once. Or of course they could be the same cucks as always and give it to something stupid like Star Wars Battlefront 2, or Cowadoody WWII, . Despite the fact that 2017 will forever be remembered in gaming history as the year where lootboxes were inflicted upon the world and pissed everyone off so much the government got involved, 2017 seems to be one of the first years in a long time where even serious dedicated gamers agreed that it was a very good year for games.

I initially intended for this blog to be an entirely solo affair, but I have come to the conclusion that much more can be done as a TEAM if we all join in. I am now considering having other writers join this site for contributing other works, but for now I’d like to introduce this. I naturally have not played every game from 2017 given that I need time to do other shit and sometimes want to play games released before the current year (and also cause I have  l i t t l e  m o n e y). As a result, I cannot do this alone, which is why I need YOU to join me! Here is how I am planning things to go.

I need people who have played at least eight games released in 2017 (in America or Europe in English that is) and we will talk amongst ourselves which games deserve to win in the various categories of my choosing (or by your suggestion if I like it enough to add it). There will be categories by genre, by console, by in game aspects (best story, graphics, music, etc) and some other more abstract categories that are to be decided. Of course these will be decided by myself and the selected judges but the actual Game of the Year will be decided in two ways. The first is that our own judges vote on which one we think is the best fit, but the second one will be different. It will be a usual “reader GOTY” that is decided based on reader votes, but it will instead be in tournament format. Each game will be paired off with another and the one with more votes moves on. There will be a total of 64 entries in the tournament, but the judges and I will decide the initial 64 since there is even more than that to choose from (I have noticed up to 140 and still counting). Anyway here are the initial 64 contenders, in no particular order, for Guardian Acorn’s GOTY. (Contenders are subject to change and likely will)

See what I mean when I say there are a ton of games to choose from? Yeah, that is probably why most sites only stick with the most popular shit. And keep in mind I have NOT played a vast majority of the games listed, I just picked the ones that seemed most fitting for the category, hence the “subject to change” disclaimer. My plan to find other people who will participate in putting this together is simply to ask many of my peers and form the results based on their input. Unfortunately, I have attempt shit like this before and it almost never takes off since rarely anyone responds and the few that do have no clue what they are doing.

That means that I am not going to have categories based on game genres that are outside of the department of myself or my followerbase or that have limited releases. I also plan to have some of the usual stuff that is specific to the games themselves such as “best story” “best graphics/art direction” “best music” “best gameplay” best “characters” etc. I also hope to throw in some silly ones but don’t know the categories yet.

Basic point of this; I need YOU’RE help with this if you have played multiple games from this year that are of remote significance since I cannot do this shit alone. Anyone who contributes will be credited when the articles go up AND will be allowed to contribute to the game descriptions. My plan is to complete the discussion process over the course of this next month, and the voting will begin during the month of January.

My reason for trying something like this out is simply because I always wondered what a “video game awards” contest would look like if there was any authenticity involved, and where it wasn’t just the obvious mainstream shit. IE I want something that may actually turn out interesting, and hopefully that is how this will turn out.

If you are interested in assisting with this process then please comment or message me telling me so.

If you would like to support me or this site, then please support my Patreon if you would like to see higher quality content with more resources to put towards it. If you don’t want to spend any money on me, then you can also help out by simply sharing my blog on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, or anywhere else where others will see it. You can also follow this blog if you would like to be kept up to date on my stuff, or you could follow me on any of my social media pages (listed at the bottom of the page) and could stop by The Guardian Acorn Discord chat if you would like to talk to me and my homies.
